Five Top Mountain Towns To Visit In The US

Visiting an American mountain town gives you the opportunity to escape from chaotic urban living and take some time out to enjoy a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere. You also get the benefit of spending time in the midst of some of the most stunningly beautiful scenery in the US.

There are a multitude of mountain towns to choose from, so which one should you choose to spend time in? Let’s look at some of the exciting adventures you can have in five of the best American mountain towns.

Taos, New Mexico

If you enjoy outdoor activities, you have plenty of opportunities to choose from in Taos. You can spend time fly fishing, hiking, river rafting or even trekking on a llama. The neighboring Sangre de Cristo Mountains provide an incredible backdrop for time spent on these activities and on sipping a cocktail at one of the friendly bars in the town.

Maggie Valley, North Carolina

Maggie Valley is the perfect base from which to explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Aside from the mountains, the town has many other attractions to savor, such as golfing, fishing, hiking and shopping at the local antique stores. You can visit the town at any time of year as the winter activities in Maggie Valley are impressive and include skiing, snowboarding and tubing.

Homer, Alaska

The remoteness of Alaska is a huge attraction, if you are looking for an escape from the noise andchaos of everyday life. Homer is a town that you can reach from the Kenai Peninsula’s Sterling Highway. It’s a place where you can relax and enjoy the views of the Kenai Mountains, or you can watch the local eagle population from the Homer Spit. This is a laid back place where the emphasis is on enjoying life.

Truckee, California

Lake Tahoe is a popular destination for anyone who wants to experience the atmosphere of a US mountain town. If you travel to the area, the north Tahoe town of Truckee is a quieter and less tourist influenced place to stay than some towns in South Tahoe. Skiing and snowboarding is popular in the area during winter months while there is a friendly atmosphere in local restaurants and taverns at all times of year.

Dahlonega, Georgia

There is plenty of history in Dahlonega; it was here that the first gold rush started, early in the nineteenth century. You can take a look at some of the history from this era at the Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site, before enjoying some relaxation time in the public square or at one of the local inns. Any visit to Dahlonega should include a stop at Red Oak Lavender Farm where organic lavender is grown; the scent is incredible.

A trip to any of these top American mountain towns is a memorable experience. Each one has many activities available such as hiking, skiing, mountain biking and dining out; all against the backdrop of stunning mountain scenery.
